History of Gaginang

Founded in March of 2003, Gaginang started when young Teochew people went online to find others who shared their unique background. With a strong desire to learn and explore our common roots, Gaginang’s co-founders: Ty Eng Lim, Mike Ching, Nick Tang, Sarah Bun, and Tuyen Tran, decided to start an organization that would promote Teochew heritage both for the Teochew community as well as for the general public. Incorporating and registering as a nonprofit in December of 2005, Gaginang has since held innumerable events and provided a plethora of ways for people to connect to others who share their interests in a common heritage, learn the Teochew language, and create media to enrich our culture. What’s more, the organization has collaborated with existing Teochew Associations in various cities in the US and around the world and even inspired the creation of two University clubs: The UCLA-Teochew Association and the UC Berkeley-Teochew Association. Gaginang provides a unique resource to the international Teochew community, and continues to grow with each year.
