GGN Teochew Family Day BBQ

Posted by tylim in Untagged

Help make this awesome event happen - bring your family members!

Daigeho! Please bring your father, mother, aunts, uncles, grandfathers, grandmothers, neices, nephews, brothers, sisters, kids, and friends so they have a chance to meet other Teochew people. I've met so many GGN members who's parents might be retired and spending most of their time at home watching tv and reading newspapers... why not bring them outside for some fresh air, puet-ue with other Teochew people, and maybe even play a few TC games. I know some of you are like "yeah, but my parents don't like meeting other people, or they won't know anyone" - that's the point! Help make this event a success =D
- Basic BBQ food, water, utensils provided (w/ vegetarian options)
- Any extra food would be much appreciated
- Teochew charades, and other family friendly games Please share the event!
Location: San Bruno Mountain State Park (555 Guadalupe Canyon Parkway, Brisbane, California 94005) - a hidden gem that's actually in Daly City and only 20mins from SF Chinatown, 36 mins from Hayward, and 50 mins from San Jose.

Teochew Know?

Posted by tylim in Untagged

Daigeho!

Ty here. Wanted to share with everyone the new Teochew-themed blog that I've created. It's called "Teochew Know?". Get it? Teochew Know - Did you know? Ha ha. Okay. As for the content, I thought compiling all of the neat Teochew media (think songs, videos, and TC-related news) that I find online (and off) onto one spot would be a lot better than just throwing it out on my personal Facebook account. I have some real gems on there. Oh, and if you see anything that you think should be on there, shoot me a message.

Seven Years

Posted by tylim in Untagged

Dáigehò! Hope that everyone has had a great year - productive, enriching, fulfilling. This year, Gaginang has had two great major events: Our GGN Conference, the third biennial, held in Philadephia this year, and our seventh annual Thanksgiving in Santa Clara, CA. We've also met many new members, had a great new staff, and much more. As we prepare for 2010, I'm glad we have new staff and renewing staff who are volunteering their time to continue carrying out Gaginang's mission.

This year, I am stepping down as President of Gaginang. I have been involved in Gaginang for 7+ years. I remember the beginnings of the organization when folks got together on AOL to chat each week, and also the excitement that I (and we) got when meeting new fellow Teochew folks.  It was an awesome time. Now, I think I've attended what seems like hundreds and hundreds of GGN events. Yes, it's true, I do tire of some elements of events, but it feels great when I see new members getting the feelings that I got way back when.

I've learned so much from GGN. I learned the power of leadership - and how necessary it is when trying to run a nonprofit organization, or any group really. I've learned that it feels really good to belong - that it gives you strength, and opens up your perspectives on life. I feel like I've grown so much as a person in the time that I have been with Gaginang - met so many great people, and had lots of fun all the while.

I'm moving on to focus on a career in instructional technology (think e-learning and training), and also exploring personal projects. I'll still be involved in Gaginang doing various projects, but am happy to pass on the torch to this year's leaders. I hope that in my time leading GGN, I have given folks a glimpse into what is possible for Gaginang. I am looking forward to what the next leaders will bring for Gaginang.

I'd like to leave everyone with two links:

1 - An awesome article about the successes of Teochew people (thx from Kim La): http://yaleglobal.yale.edu/content/teochews-can-take-pride-successes

2 - Also, an awesome Teochew song that I first heard at the first GGN Conference from a Guchaigue remix from Son: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=q-1NV7WZ3m8

Thank you GGN - for everything!

Dáigehò!

For those of you who are interested in the latest going on Diōsuan (潮汕) visit: http://news.myshantou.net/

It's an English language website that covers news from the Diōsuan region. The latest post was back in May of 2009, so it's been on a little hiatus - however it's great reading the archives. They cover the good, bad, and ugly of Diōsuan!

Teochew Hip-Hop from Shantou

Who'd a thought there was a thriving hip-hop scene in Shantou? Well, there is, and the videos below share some sounds and thoughts from the artists. Researchers Angela Steele and Lila Babb have shared their findings via blog and youtube videos. There are two videos on hip-hop in Shantou. Check out the videos below. More about "Dongting:

Dongting is a research blog on Hip Hop in China. It is a space to share the music and the stories of the Hip Hop artists we encounter, the questions we explore, and the ideas we develop. Dongting is not a chronological history nor is it a comprehensive profile of Hip Hop in China. Rather, it is a our personal record of what we find interesting to listen to and pleasing to the ear.

Singing in Teochew

 leu-dan-mai-2

Hey ya'll

Myself, Huy, Duy (all Gaginang staff), and Katherine (from UCB-TCA), got together this past wekend for GGN's TC Projects Challenge. We were part of the music group, and decided to sing an original composition set to the music of The Get Up Kids' song Anne Arbour. Our song is called "Leu Dan Mai". It was kinda hard thinking up the lyrics, singing it was hard for me too. I have no voice training (and it's apparent in the recording), but its so much fun doing music in Teochew. Hope you guys enjoy the song, and perhaps become encouraged to try to write your own lyrics, and perform your own songs =D

Put Diojiu on the Map!

Daigeho!

Hopefully folks have noticed that we have a feature under Interactive, called Diojiu Map. It's a Google Map listing of TC businesses, TC associations, and other TC-related things in the real world. I encourage everyone to use it. Here are some ways that it can be useful to you:

 - Visiting a new city? Craving some Diojiu-food? You'll be able to know which places are Diojiu-owned, if not actually Diojiu food places.

- Put your own city on the map: You know there's gotta be some Diojiu-owned places, why not share this information? It shows that Gaginang are everywhere. I bet your relatives own a business! =D
